Changing Lives in Guatemala: Reflections from Dr. Anthony Czaplicki
Over the course of four incredible surgical days in Guatemala, our orthopedic mission team had the privilege of performing 64 surgeries for patients who otherwise may never have had access to specialized orthopedic care. While the number itself is remarkable, what stands out most is the teamwork, generosity, and gratitude that made this mission possible. Three joint replacement surgeons, two orthopedic trauma surgeons and a reconstructive plastic surgeon worked collaboratively to treat these complex problems.
From the moment the first patient entered the operating room until the final surgery was completed, every member of the team played an essential role. Surgeons, anesthesiologists, physician assistants, nurses, and surgical technologists worked side by side with a shared purpose: to restore mobility, relieve pain, and improve lives. The level of collaboration, dedication, and professionalism demonstrated throughout the week was truly inspiring.
We would also like to extend special thanks to our physical therapists, whose expertise helped patients begin their recovery journey immediately after surgery. The impact of rehabilitation cannot be overstated, and the encouragement and guidance provided to our patients was invaluable.
Our gratitude also goes to the equipment representatives who volunteered their time and expertise. Their efforts ensured that the necessary implants, instruments, and equipment were available and functioning properly, allowing our surgical team to provide the highest possible level of care.
Perhaps the most moving aspect of the trip was the overwhelming appreciation shown by the patients and their families. Many traveled long distances and waited patiently for the opportunity to receive treatment. Their gratitude, resilience, and trust reminded us why mission work is so important. The smiles, hugs, prayers, and heartfelt expressions of thanks will stay with us long after we have returned home.
None of this would have been possible without the generous support of our donors. To everyone who contributed financially, thank you for believing in this mission and helping make these surgeries possible. Your generosity directly impacted dozens of individuals and families, providing life-changing care and renewed hope.
We are equally grateful to the companies and organizations that donated equipment, implants, supplies, and other resources. Your partnership allowed us to maximize our impact and provide care to patients who desperately needed it.
Mission trips like this are powerful reminders that healthcare is about more than procedures and diagnoses—it is about people. It is about coming together, sharing our talents, and serving others with compassion.
On behalf of the entire team, thank you to everyone who helped make this mission a success. Together, we changed lives, and in many ways, those lives changed ours as well.
We look forward to returning in the future and continuing this important work.
Sincerely,
Dr. Anthony Czaplicki III
